Cups to Grams Converter for Baking
This cups to grams converter does the one thing most charts get wrong: it weighs every ingredient separately. Pick your ingredient, type the amount in cups, tablespoons or teaspoons, and get the exact grams to weigh out — or work backwards from grams to cups.
Based on 1 cup of plain flour = 125 g

Keep this table for the kitchen wall. Every figure is the weight of one standard US cup (236.6ml) of the ingredient, spooned or poured in the usual way — the same data the converter above uses.

Why a cup of flour is not a cup of sugar
Cups measure space, not weight. Fill a cup with feather-light flour and it weighs 125g; fill the same cup with honey and it weighs 340g. That is why a single "cups-to-grams" number can never work — and why so many converted recipes fail. Always convert ingredient by ingredient, exactly as the tool above does.
Two habits make cup conversions even more reliable. First, spoon flour into the cup and level it off rather than scooping from the bag, which packs it down and can add 20g or more. Second, once a recipe is converted, weigh everything — British-style — from then on. A £10 set of kitchen scales is the most accurate baking tool you will ever own, and it is how every recipe on this site is measured.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of flour?
A cup of plain flour weighs 125g. Self-raising flour is also 125g, while strong bread flour is a little heavier at 130g and wholemeal flour a little lighter at 120g.
How many grams are in a cup of sugar?
It depends on the sugar: caster sugar is 225g per cup, granulated sugar 200g, icing sugar 125g and soft light brown sugar 220g (lightly packed). The finer the sugar, the more fits in the cup.
Why does every ingredient weigh differently?
A cup measures volume, not weight — it is always the same 236.6ml scoop. Ingredients pack into that space differently: flour is light and airy, honey is dense and heavy, so a cup of honey (340g) weighs nearly three times a cup of flour (125g).
How many grams is a tablespoon of butter?
About 14g. A cup of butter is 227g and there are 16 tablespoons in a cup, so 227 ÷ 16 ≈ 14g per tablespoon. A tablespoon of flour is roughly 8g, and of caster sugar about 14g.
Can I convert grams back to cups?
Yes — choose "Grams" in the unit menu above and type the weight. The converter works backwards too, showing the cups, tablespoons and ounces for any gram amount.
